A scenic paved highway run from Port Alberni through Cathedral Grove and the Coombs Old Country Market to Courtenay. The ancient Douglas-firs of Cathedral Grove — some over 800 years old — are not to be missed.
This stage transitions from the forest service roads of the west coast to well-paved highways heading north. The early section through MacMillan Provincial Park along Cameron Lake is the scenic highlight — Cathedral Grove contains some of the oldest and tallest trees on Vancouver Island. A side-trip to Tofino and Ucluelet is absolutely worth it if time permits.
Coombs is a must-stop — the Old Country Market, famously known for the goats that graze on its grass roof, has great food, coffee, and browsing. From Coombs the route joins Highway 19 north to Courtenay, which is efficient if unremarkable. Little Qualicum Falls is a beautiful short detour.
Steampunk Cafe in Port Alberni for coffee before departure. Full services available throughout Port Alberni.
Coombs Old Country Market ("Goats on the Roof") for lunch — groceries, restaurant, deli, fresh produce, and ice cream. Plenty of dining options in Courtenay at stage end.
Cathedral Grove (MacMillan Provincial Park) — ancient Douglas-firs up to 800 years old and 9 metres in circumference. Little Qualicum Falls — waterfalls, trails, lake swimming, and picnic facilities. Goats on the Roof (Coombs Old Country Market) — international foods, baked goods, ice cream, and goats grazing on a grass roof.
Cathedral Grove can be crowded in summer — arrive early or expect a short wait for parking. A detour to Tofino via Highway 4 West is highly recommended if time allows.
