Once the most punishing stage on the VIGL, the Bamfield road was recently paved and is now a smooth, enjoyable ride through forest and over small river bridges. A relaxing contrast to the rugged stages around it.
This road used to be a complete nightmare — large rocks, potholes, and road ripples everywhere. Recent paving has transformed it into a smooth, enjoyable ride suitable for all motorcycle types. The stage winds through forested terrain, crosses several small river bridges, and offers occasional lake views along the way.
There's nothing truly memorable in terms of scenery, but the ease of riding is a welcome break after the rougher western stages. China Creek Marina makes a nice rest stop midway through. Port Alberni is a full-service town and a launching pad for an optional Tofino detour if you're tempted.
The West Coast Trail trailhead in Bamfield serves as the standard meeting point before setting out on this stage.
Steampunk Cafe in Port Alberni for coffee, Clam Bucket for lunch or dinner. No services between Bamfield and Port Alberni — bring food and water.
China Creek Marina & Campground — a well-maintained waterfront marina with beach-front camping available. A great spot to take a break halfway through the stage.
Port Alberni is a good base if you want to add a side trip to Tofino (highly recommended). From Port Alberni, Highway 4 West leads to Tofino — allow a full day or two for this detour.
