About the VIGL

How a move to Victoria and a love of adventure riding led to the creation of Vancouver Island's definitive motorcycle route.

When I moved to Victoria a few years ago, I wanted to put together a really adventurous motorcycle trip around the island. So, I started to do some research. I read about the Trans Canadian Adventure Trail, I read the Destination Highways book, discussion forums and Facebook groups, including the Lower Island Riding Club.

What I found is that we have sooo many great motorcycle roads on the Island. The Vancouver Island Grand Loop stitches together this patchwork of amazing roads into one continuous loop that circumnavigates the Island.

If you're looking for a great motorcycle adventure, there are twisty roads in East Sooke, the mountains of Strathcona Park, beautiful lakes near Port Alice, remote logging roads near Woss, ocean roads all up the East side of the Island with Mill Bay, Nanoose Bay right up to Telegraph Cove.

My hope is that this will encourage local riders to plan out their own summer motorcycle trips, and also attract riders from all over North America and the world to visit Vancouver Island and experience the incredible riding we have to offer.

The route is approximately 1,700 km long, about 50% paved and 50% dirt/gravel. Depending on your pace, it will take 5–8 days to complete. It's recommended to ride an adventure motorcycle due to the amount of dirt and gravel roads.

The entire route has been made available through an interactive Google Map and you can also download the .gpx file of the route.

If you have any feedback on road conditions, recommended side-trips branching off from the main route, or would like to report a road closure or detour, please contact me.
