Stage 3 is set to a backdrop of mountains, stretches of forest, roadside creeks, and some impressive trees. Most of it follows gravel forest service roads, and it can get pretty dry and dusty during mid-summer. The reward is seclusion and proximity to some of the most iconic old-growth forests remaining on Vancouver Island.
The Avatar Grove and Red Creek Fir are highlights not to be missed. Navigation can be a little tricky at the beginning of the stage where a few forks in the road may cause confusion — download the GPX and pay attention. The road is generally hard-packed and in good condition throughout.
Coastal Kitchen Cafe or the Port Renfrew Hotel Pub — both are common gathering spots before departure.
