Remote dirt road exploration through mixed forest and lake country, connecting Sayward to Campbell River. Navigation is the primary challenge on this isolated and rewarding backcountry stage.
Leaving Sayward, the primary challenge of this stage is navigation. Mostly wide forest service roads with some stretches of double track lead through remote terrain toward Morton Lake and eventually Campbell River. Refuel at the Sayward gas station before departing — services are limited out in the backcountry.
When it appears that Big Tree Road has come to an end, backtrack to the mainline you turned off of — it will eventually connect with Memekey Road up over the hill and continue as expected. The stage rewards patience with remote, isolated road exploring through varied landscapes. The Ripple Rock Trail near Campbell River makes an excellent way to end the day.
The Sayward gas station — fuel up here before departing into the backcountry. This is an important stop.
A hotdog stand in Sayward for a quick bite before departure. Campbell River has comprehensive dining and pub options at stage end.
Ripple Rock Trail — a demanding 3-hour roundtrip hike to Seymour Narrows with impressive views of the tidal rapids. Morton Lake Provincial Park — a scenic backcountry lake with camping, swimming, and picnicking.
When Big Tree Road appears to end, backtrack to the main line and continue to Memekey Road over the hill. Navigation is the hardest part of this stage — load the GPX before leaving Sayward.
