Widely considered the best stage of the VIGL. A fun bridge crossing launches you from Woss into challenging terrain, then cliff-side tracks overlooking Atluck Lake with a mountain rising on one side. Remote, demanding, and unforgettable.
Stage 9 is widely considered the best stage of the entire Vancouver Island Grand Loop. A fun bridge crossing launches the stage out of Woss, followed by challenging middle-section roads, and spectacular cliff-side tracks running alongside Atluck Lake with a mountain rising on one side and the lake stretching far below.
While the total distance is not extreme, the middle section can be quite challenging with larger fist-sized gravel that demands full attention. Navigation can also be tricky — carry extra fuel and water, and load the GPX before departing. Little Hudson Caves and Devil's Bath are both worth short detours off the main route.
The gas station in Woss — fuel up here as there are no services until Port Alice.
A local breakfast diner and a surprisingly good sushi and burger sports bar in Woss. Nothing between Woss and Port Alice — pack snacks and plenty of water.
Atluck Lake — remote backcountry lake surrounded by logging roads with spectacular cliff-side riding along the shore. Little Hudson Caves — limestone formations with a rock arch, short trails, and clear green water. Devil's Bath Viewpoint — a roadside picnic area overlooking a distinctive bowl-shaped water formation.
While the distance is not extreme, it's easy to get lost. Extra fuel and water are essential. No cell coverage for most of this stage. Carry a personal locator beacon.
