12 Port Hardy → Telegraph Cove

A short, fast paved run from Port Hardy to the historic waterfront village of Telegraph Cove — the perfect decompression after the rugged northern dirt stages. Easy riding, whale watching, and a charming boardwalk village await.

Overview

After the punishing conditions of Stage 11, Stage 12 is exactly what you need — a short, fast stretch of paved highway that gets the carburetors cleaned out. The route follows Highway 19 south with a high speed limit and very little traffic, before turning off onto Beaver Cove Road for the final approach to Telegraph Cove.

Beaver Cove Road has a different character altogether — morning fog often drifts through, and you pass an active sawmill before descending into Telegraph Cove's historic boardwalk village. The cove is a beautifully preserved former logging and fish cannery settlement, now a popular resort with cabin rentals, kayaking, and world-class orca whale watching.

☕ Meetup Location

Captain Hardy's in Port Hardy for breakfast before the easy ride south. Multiple dining options near the Port Hardy waterfront.

🍽 Food & Coffee

Multiple options in Port Hardy. Telegraph Cove has limited but excellent dining options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the resort.

📍 Points of Interest

Telegraph Cove — a beautifully preserved former sawmill and cannery community, now operating as a resort with cabin rentals, kayak rentals, boat charters, and whale watching. One of the best places in BC to spot orca whales in the wild.

⚠ Special Notes

BC Ferries traffic from the Prince Rupert route can briefly increase traffic on Highway 19. Telegraph Cove books up quickly in summer — consider reserving accommodation in advance.
